Several factors limit the use of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell, including the fact that the fuel cell generates more heat than an equivalent amount of electricity, and that the hydrogen used is not readily available.
In the oxygen-hydrogen fuel cell, the hydrogen-oxygen fuel is converted to a protic material which is electrochemically reduced to produce the energy, with water being the byproduct of the reduction. The oxygen used in the fuel cells is obtained from the air. The oxygen-hydrogen fuel cell is of interest for its ability to produce energy more cleanly than the hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell.
